Fri. November 17 - Penn State birthplace commemorated with historical marker
Plus: Happy Valley Adventure Bureau awards local hospitality community standouts
In The News
🪧 The Centre Furnace Mansion in State College has been commemorated with a historical marker as the official birthplace of Penn State University, where the Farmer’s High School of Pennsylvania's Board of Trustees met in 1855 to establish the institution. The historical marker is part of an initiative by Penn State's alumni association and office of strategic communications to highlight the university's milestones and heritage. Efforts are underway to revitalize all historical markers on the University Park campus, some of which have been in place for nearly three decades. [WPSU]
🏆 The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau (HVAB) celebrated local hospitality standouts at the second annual Happy Valley Hospitality Awards. The event was attended by nearly 200 professionals at Titan Hollow in Bellefonte, spotlighting the local food, beverage, and lodging industries. An independent committee chose honorees from five categories, including a new “Community Favorite” award sponsored by Barash Media. The "Peter J. Walker Spirit of Hospitality" award was given to the State College Downtown Improvement District Clean Team, recognizing exceptional work ethic and positive impact. HVAB President Fritz Smith announced plans to expand the awards next year. [StateCollege.com]
🏊 Centre County Commissioners are backing a nearly $1 million state grant request to renovate Kepler Pool in Bellefonte, which has been closed since 2020 due to mechanical and structural issues. The Nittany Valley Joint Recreation Authority, which owns the pool, has faced financial challenges and higher-than-expected bids for the project but has secured multiple grants and formed a fundraising nonprofit to support the effort. The renovation includes a new competition-size pool, splash pad, and additional amenities aimed at attracting families and supporting local swimming programs. If awarded, the state grant would enable the NVJRA to seek further funding from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in 2024. [StateCollege.com]
